

Barbara Brooks Yates, age 88, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025, at the Grove at Countryside, Clearwater, Florida. She was born on March 4, 1937, in Bascom, Florida, to Columbus Robert and Lottie Scott Brooks. She grew up in Chattahoochee, where she experienced numerous accomplishments, including Valedictorian and Drum Major. A proud graduate of Florida State University, she attained a master’s degree in English/Education. She taught for 52 years at middle school, high school, and Jr. College levels, with a focus on AP high school English. She became known as a rigorous, outstanding educator and was named Teacher of the Year in both Leon and Pinellas counties. Barabara liked reading, crossword puzzles, and participating in her book club, Bible study group, and P.E.O. She is survived by her sister Fran Everett, three nieces, a nephew, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Her husband of three decades, Tom Yates, and her son, Lance McPeak, both passed away before her. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters Dorothy Roberts and Poci Fordham, as well as her brother Bob Brooks. Barbara will be missed, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
