Benjamin (Ben) Miller, January 8, 1918 to February 13, 2019, was born in North Braddock PA. He was the seventh of eight children born to Francis and Mary Ann (Schaad) Miller. Ben began his working career as an accountant with Sears Roebuck and Company. In August of 1941 he married Dorothy Carr, who has predeceased him. They began their married life in Washington DC. Only a few months into their marriage of 73 years, the United States entered World War II. Ben enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was trained as a navigator. He has always been a wonderful teacher, which was noted by his commanding officers. As a result, he trained later recruits and volunteers to be navigators.
After the war, Ben welcomed two daughters, Janet and Virginia, into his life.
All of Ben’s working career was spent with Sears. He held many positions in the company and moved his family several times during his career. In the 1950s, Sears expanded into Canada and he helped to open the first Simpson Sears store in Canada, moving the family to Ottawa for four years. During the 60s, at the dawning of the age of computers and data processing, Ben was singled out and transferred to company headquarters in Chicago and became a leader in moving Sears in this new direction. Ben retired from Sears in the mid 1980s as the head of data processing for the Eastern Territory.
During Ben’s long life he enjoyed many hobbies. He was a landscape painter, fisherman, skier, golfer, avid bridge player and world traveler. After retirement, he and Dorothy were able to spend many years traveling together and sometimes with their daughters, grand-daughters Melissa and Meredith, and son-in-law Jack.
Ben was always kind to people and thoughtful in many ways. He was a true gentleman and one of the Greatest Generation. Ben was loved and admired by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to suncoasthospice.org in his memory or to a charity of your choice.
