He was born May 7, 1929, in Yonkers, NY to Mitchell and Stella Blasewitz Liswith (Lisiewicz). He was married for 65 years to Marian Bove Liswith. Carl and his family moved to Clearwater Florida in 1981 and lived there until after his retirement. In 2001, he and his wife, Marian, moved to a Belleair Beach beachfront condo where they entertained friends and family in the sun and surf for many years.
Carl is survived by his wife, Marian, three sons Mitchell Lewis (Phoenix AZ), Steven Robert and his wife Blair (Palm Harbor, FL), Theodore John and his wife Audra (Seminole, FL), and his nephew Joseph Kurilecz (Weymouth, MA), whom Carl regarded as a fourth son. He is also survived by his five grandchildren Sydney Sutton-Liswith, Lane Sutton-Liswith, Eric, Jessica and Mitchell.
Carl graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a degree in metallurgical engineering. He was a brother and officer in the Theta Delta Chi fraternity and remained active in supporting the fraternity throughout his lifetime. One of Carl’s first jobs after earning his degree, was developing a lightweight polymer-based battery for the Nike missile thereby bringing online the nation’s first operational anti-aircraft missile system.
Carl served his country in the United States Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. He served as a gunnery officer aboard the USS Niobrara including combat service during the Korean War. During his naval career, Carl also served as material procurement officer at the Bureau of Ordinance in Washington, D.C. and Commanding Officer, Naval Air Reserve Training Detachment, Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn NY earning the rank of Navy Captain. Carl retired from the Navy after 30 years of service to his country.
During his civilian life, Carl was employed by the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) and rose to National Senior Marketing Executive serving accounts and mainframe computers to corporations including J C Penney and Tampa Electric Corporation. He retired from IBM after 35 years with the company.
After learning the game as a caddy in Westchester County, NY Carl became an avid golfer. Over his lifetime, he was an active member at Sleepy Hollow County Club, Sleepy Hollow NY and Countryside Country Club, Clearwater FL achieving a 7 handicap during his lifetime along with several tournament and club championships.
Carl’s greatest love of all was spending time with his family and giving to his community. He served on the board of Deacons of the Briarcliff Congregational Church in Briarcliff Manor, NY coached little league baseball, and was always present at his sons’ cross-country meets, and football and baseball games. He also enjoyed grilling and baking and was well known for his homemade Polish fruitcakes at Christmas and Babka with cinnamon and sugar.
We mourn the passing of our family patriarch but know that all those with whom Carl had contact are better people for it.
