Fred graduated from Robertsdale High School in 1958 and went on to serve his country proudly in the United States Navy for three years. After his military service, he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Auburn University, Class of 1969. A devoted Auburn fan, Fred cheered on the Tigers every season.
He moved with his family to Florida and enjoyed a long and successful career with GTE, where he worked for over 25 years. On May 31, 1994, Fred married the love of his life, Joyce Pennington, and together they built a warm and joyful life.
Fred was a beloved father to his two sons, Miles and Adam Pennington, and stepfather to Melissa Hughes. He deeply loved his family and took pride in being involved in his children's lives—coaching football, basketball, and baseball when they were young, and even serving as a soccer referee. His fondest memories included family trips to Disney World, outdoor adventures, and weekend bike rides.
In his free time, Fred enjoyed sailing, gardening, fishing, camping, and cycling. He was a proud member of the Masons and Civitan Club for many years, and he had a lifelong soft spot for dogs—never without a faithful pup by his side.
Fred will be remembered for his kindness, energy, sense of humor, and dedication to family and community. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Pennington; sons, Miles Pennington and Adam Pennington (Isabelle Huck-Pennington); stepdaughter, Melissa Hughes (Sharon Herman) ; and his cherished dogs, Bailey and Rusty.
A graveside service will be held at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park on July 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory may be made to the SPCA, honoring his love for animals.
