Born on August 24, 1939, in Elmhurst, Illinois, Darlene was the beloved daughter of Russell Furman and Florence Bartlett. She grew up alongside her cherished sister, Beverly. Darlene pursued her education with determination and pride, earning her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University—a school she would cheer for her entire life as a devoted Seminoles fan.
Darlene shared over six decades of love and devotion with her husband, Joseph Louis Thomas, Jr., the love of her life. Together, they raised two daughters, Beverly and Gina.
For over 40 years, Darlene dedicated her career to teaching at Skycrest Christian School and another 20 years as a teacher’s aide. She was known for her kind heart, steady guidance, and commitment to her students' growth both academically and spiritually.
Outside the classroom, Darlene’s joy came from simple and meaningful pleasures: baking sweet treats, doting on her dogs, and most of all, spending time with her family. Darlene was also a bit of a writer, she will be remembered by her friend’s and family for her personalized poems that she would make special for birthdays and celebrations. She was the heart of every gathering, known for her patriotism, generosity, gentle spirit, and unconditional love.
Darlene is survived by her devoted husband Joseph Thomas, Jr.; daughters Beverly (Kevin Pruden) Pruden and Gina (Kurt Klaus, Sr.) Klaus; and grandchildren Joshua Bien, Joey Bien, Eva Klaus, and Kurt Klaus; great-grandchildren Lyla, Payton, and Avery; sister Beverly Praschan; and many extended family.
Her legacy of love, faith, and family will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.
A graveside service for Mrs. Darlene Thomas will be held Monday June 9th, 2025 at 2:00pm at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park with a celebration of life service to follow and reception.
