Born on May 24, 1938, in Boston, Dixie was the beloved daughter of the late Flora and Harold Lloyd Chambers. When she was three, the family moved to Wauchula, Florida where she grew up. Dixie carried with her throughout life the grace, determination, and warmth that would become her trademark. While attending Florida Southern College, she was a proud member of Sigma Sigma Sigma, forming friendships and values that lasted a lifetime.
Dixie was an educator at heart and a visionary leader. As the owner and headmaster of McClellan Park School, she dedicated herself to providing an exceptional education for generations of students. The school became known for serving both the families of carnival workers who traveled the country and some of Sarasota's most prominent families, a reflection of Dixie's belief that every child deserved opportunity, encouragement, and excellence.
Above all, Dixie cherished her family. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life and the center of her world. She celebrated every accomplishment, treasured every gathering, and never missed an opportunity to share her love, wisdom, and unwavering support.
Dixie also shared a remarkable partnership with her beloved husband, Leslie. Long before home renovation shows became popular, Dixie and Leslie were, in many ways, the original Chip and Joanna Gaines. Together they found beauty where others saw possibility, lovingly restoring and renovating more than twenty homes. Their projects reflected not only creativity and hard work but also their shared passion for building something meaningful together.
Dixie leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, generosity, and adventure. She is survived by her children, Lynn (Patrick Flemming) Welter Sherman and Leslie (Yulia) Welter IV; her treasured grandchildren, Lauren Leslie Sherman, Brooks Edward Sherman, Nia Annalisa Welter, Michaela Ann Welter, and Emily Leslie Welter; as well as many extended family members, dear friends, former students, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
In addition to her parents, Dixie was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Leslie Welter III, and her siblings, Jack Chambers and Shirley Elems.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, Florida 34241.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Suncoast Hospice Foundation, 2675 Tampa Road, Palm Harbor, Florida 34684.
Dixie will be remembered for her boundless energy, entrepreneurial spirit, fierce devotion to family, and her gift for making every person she met feel valued and loved. Her life was a beautiful example of a heart fully invested in family, community, and the joy of creating a lasting home wherever she went.
