Dorothy M Olsen
July 12, 1922 – February 9, 2019
Dorothy Mae Olsen, 96, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 9, 2019. She was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on July 12, 1922 to Laurence & Elsie Longua. After moving to Chicago, Illinois as a young girl, Dorothy graduated from Lucy Flower High School in Chicago in 1939.
She met Norman Henry Olsen at Joyce Methodist Church, and they married there in 1942. They were married for 58 years until Norman’s passing in 2000. In the early 1950’s, Dorothy and Norman built their own home in Des Plaines, a northern suburb of Chicago. They raised their three children and lived there happily until moving to Clearwater, Florida in 1995 to be closer to family.
Dorothy’s organizational skills led her to working as a school secretary, in elementary and the local high schools.
Dorothy was an accomplished pianist, first practicing at home on a cardboard keyboard and then saving to buy her own grand piano as a teenager. She played that same piano into her 90’s. She also loved to sing and was a dedicated church choir member for many years.
A lifelong Methodist, Dorothy was strong in her faith, and along with husband Norman, helped start a new Emmaus Community in Northern Illinois. In addition, she enjoyed participating in Community Bible Study here in Florida.
Dorothy will be missed by her loving family, sons Larry (Kathy), Sherwood, AR and Roy, Evergreen, CO, daughter Carol Murphy (Kevin), Clearwater, grandchildren Gary (Tina), Kristen Maddox and Lauren Murphy, as well as great-grandchildren Hunter Olsen and Bridgette Maddox. She was predeceased by her parents, Laurence and Elsie, husband Norman and sister Ruth Garrity.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am, March 9, 2019 at Heritage United Methodist Church in Clearwater.
