With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Emilio E. Riera, a beloved son, father, brother, uncle, and friend whose kindness, laughter, and unconditional love left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Emilio is survived by his mother, Ana “Abuela” Victoria Martínez de Riera; his beloved sons, Daniel J. Riera and Philip M. Riera (Alecia); his former wife, Donna M. Riera; his siblings, Javi Riera (Aimee), Rafa Riera(Janet), Ana "Tuti" Riera Dale (John), and Vivian Otheguy (Juan); and his cherished nieces and nephews, Elena Bell(Sean), Luke Dale, Nicolás Otheguy (Ashley), Gabriel Otheguy (Alexandra), Amanda Riera, and Julian Riera.
Known lovingly as Emilio, Emi, Tío, Papa, Papa Bear, and by many other affectionate names, Emilio was truly one of the sweetest souls this world has ever known. He had the kindest heart, the warmest smile, and the funniest, goofiest sense of humor that could brighten even the hardest days. He was a man of God, found wonder in the beauty of the universe, the stars, and space, and had a lifelong passion for aviation—a passion he proudly shared with and passed on to his sons.
Emilio was born in Santiago de Cuba and immigrated to the United States with his family, where they built a new life together. Through hard work, perseverance, and faith, he created a life centered on love, family, and serving others.
Professionally, Emilio built a rewarding career with IBM in Vermont before later following his passion for nature as a Park Ranger at Honeymoon Island State Park in Florida. Beyond his work, he found joy in tap dancing and performing at the Lyric Theatre, competing in athletics at Rackets Edge, exploring scenic bike rides with close friends and scoring the best discounts and deals at local restaurants with his cherished friends. Emilio also blessed Donna and their children with annual trips to Puerto Rico, where days spent on the beach, enjoying flavored ice, and listening to the soothing songs of the coquí at night became cherished family traditions. Those simple moments created memories that will forever live in their hearts and remain some of their most treasured reminders of time spent together.
Whether at work, on stage, outdoors, or simply spending time with those he loved, Emilio had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome and leaving them with a smile.
One of Emilio's greatest acts of love was his unwavering devotion to his mother. He chose to live with and care for her, ensuring she was always comfortable, never alone, and surrounded by the love and companionship she deserved. That selflessness was simply who he was.
Emilio left this world far too soon, and the loss is felt more deeply than words can express. Though our hearts are shattered, we are forever grateful for the love, laughter, wisdom, and countless memories he gave us. His gentle spirit will continue to guide us, his smile and jokes will forever be remembered, and his love will live on in all who were blessed to know him.
He will be beyond missed and always held close in our hearts. God bless you, Emilio! May you rest in peace, dance amongst the stars and embrace the universe with our Heavenly Father. We will all meet again soon. We love you!
A Memorial Mass will take place at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church in Safety Harbor at 10:30am on Friday, July 17th.The Inurnment and Celebration of Life will be held privately.
