Enid “Thelma” Henry was born in Rosewell, Jamaica to Victor Reader and Iris McCalla Perry. From a baby, she was lovingly raised by her aunt, Gladys “Miss Mama” Reader Roy, and her husband Zacheus Roy. She was one of ten sisters including Florence (deceased), Leonora (deceased), Rebecca, Evadne, Leticia, Hermena, Christiana, Linnette (deceased), and Deloris.
She attended Eccleston School in Browns Hall, Jamaica. She would later receive her GED from Clearwater High School after immigrating to the U.S. She was married to Edward Henry, the father of two of her children, Carole and Cynthia Henry for many years. She brought her three daughters, Claudette Powell (deceased), Carole, and Cynthia with her from Jamaica and was very proud that they all graduated college and were successful in their careers. She worked with Douglas Zelman as a caregiver to his two daughters for several years and was considered a beloved member of his family. She worked at Largo Medical Center as a Dietary Manager for over 25 years. She also worked part-time as a certified nurse’s assistant at various nursing homes in Pinellas County, Florida.
Her daughter Claudette and her son-in-law Christopher Powell brightened Thelma’s life with three grandchildren: Moya Robinson, Courtney, and Micah Powell. Micah and his wife Nicole Powell brought even more joy into her life with the addition of Alina and Leland Zak, Christopher and Camilla Powell. Moya and her husband Jonathan Robinson added Samantha to her happiness and no day was complete without Samantha happily babbling to her GG on the phone. Courtney and his wife Anca Dragnev added Arielle Dragnev-Powell to her bundles of joy.
Thelma loved to crochet and made beautiful angel blankets for her great-grandchildren and for residents at the Kimberly Home Pregnancy Center in Clearwater. She enjoyed cruising to many countries with her family and friends. Her two favorite cruises were to Alaska with Claudette and Christopher and her cruise on the Danube River in Europe. She traveled to Canada, England, various other countries, and within the U.S. She notoriously enjoyed playing solitaire for hours at a time on her cell phone. Having grown up in the rural part of Jamaica, she had a love of and a knack for growing plants. She proudly collected avocados from her backyard tree and distributed them to her family.
She was the Reader family historian and the glue that kept her extended family of cousins in Jamaica, the U.S., Canada, and England connected and in communication. Her love of friendships and people led her to host students from various countries in her Clearwater home. Even after returning to their native countries, they remained in contact with her for many years. She read her Bible diligently, found inspiration in Bible verses, and was a member of New Beginnings Community Church in Clearwater, Florida. Her gentle presence, her loving kindness, her compassion for those in need, and her love will be greatly missed by her family. Our matriarch will remain in our hearts for as long as we live.
A wake for Enid will be held Saturday, July 27, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at New Beginnings Community Church, 401 Yelvington Ave, Clearwater, FL 33755.
