Fred was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 10, 1937, to Vera and Fredrich Albin Thomas, Sr. He grew up in Chicago, and after graduating High School served in the United States Marine Corp. Upon leaving the Marine Corp, Fred moved back to Chicago where he met the love of his life, the former Joy Grabill, whom he married on June 10, 1961. Fred and Joy were together for 62 years before Joy passed away in 2023. Together they raised three children, Janet (Stephen), James who preceded them in death in 1981, and John (Wendy). He was blessed to have six grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Montana, Mikaela, McKenna, Harrison, Cole, and Bryson. Fred’s early career was defined by his incredible work ethic and skills as a successful salesperson which continued after moving to Clearwater in 1973. In late 1974, he opened a warehouse outlet store, selling various items which included swimming pool supplies. That business became Pinch A Penny in 1975. After building a successful business, he semi-retired in 1993 from Pinch A Penny so that he could devote time to serving the City of Clearwater as a Commissioner. After leaving public life in 1996, he devoted most of his time to Joy, their family, and charitable organizations, while also managing a cattle farm, and opening a restaurant. He was incredibly proud of his accomplishments in business and public service and quietly gave to charities and faith-based organizations too numerous to list. But what he was most proud of was his family, anchored by his faith in Jesus Christ. Fred is survived by his daughter and her husband, his youngest son and his wife, six grandchildren, and other beloved family members and friends. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle; and he will be missed by those he leaves behind.
A private service will be held for the immediate family at a later date.
