

George Morton Bonesteel – June 29, 1925 – January 19, 2015 Mort passed away peacefully at his nursing home in Palm Harbor, FL at the age of 90 years old. Mort a long time resident of Palm Harbor, lead a life highlighted with personal achievement, a loving family, and service to his country and community. Born in Council Bluffs, IA, to Guy and Grace Bonesteel, Mort would later graduate from high school in Rochester, MN. At Iowa State University, he served as a student manager of the football team, and later, would become the first college graduate in his family with an Engineering degree. WWII would interrupt his college years while serving with the Army Corp of Engineers in France and Germany. The Army experience opened his eyes to the fascination of Europe, leading to numerous vacations in Europe, and later, discovering his roots on the German Wine Strasse region, in the village of Herxheim am Berg. Following graduation from Iowa State, Mort worked as a mechanical engineer at General Motors. He retired in 1984 after 30 years, to focus on his family, community, and country. During his life, Mort would achieve the rank of Eagle Scout and later serve as a Scoutmaster. By far his largest community influence was achieved within Kiwanis International in Indianapolis and Clearwater. While serving for over 50 years, he would achieve the office Kiwanis State Governor. With his Kiwanis Club and the Head Start program of Clearwater, he organized reading programs for disadvantaged, pre-school children and numerous other initiatives that served the people and specifically, the children of the region. For his many important and worthwhile contributions, Mort would later be recognized as one of Clearwater's Citizens of the Year. Mort was a member of the North Bay Community Church and a member of the Compac Sail Club, both in Clearwater. Known by family and friends alike for his passionate loyalty, love of country and family, Mort shared a zest for life and great sense of humor, which always made a positive impact on everyone whom he touched. His big smile and friendship will be missed by all. Mort is survived by his wife of 30 years, Katherine, and their combined families of 6 children, 11 grand children, and 4 great grandchildren. Chapel services are planned for 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 23 at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, located at 2853 Sunset Point Rd. in Clearwater.
