Born on December 21, 1956, in Dunedin, Florida, to Jimmie Sue (née Harris) and Marvin Odell Scoggins, Howard was raised with strong values and a deep respect for hard work. From the age of 12, he worked alongside his father at the family’s business — Marvin’s Automotive, a respected mechanic shop built from the ground up by his dad. Howard eventually took over and ran the business for many years, earning a reputation as a straight-shooting mechanic who could fix just about anything. His son Harris also worked there for a time, carrying on the family tradition. Howard sold the business five years ago to enjoy a well-earned retirement.
A man of few words, Howard lived life on his terms. He found peace in the outdoors, spending countless hours hunting and fishing. He had a lifelong passion for restoring classic cars and, in his younger years, tore through dirt tracks as a fearless motorcycle racer.
At the center of Howard’s life was his family. He was married to Shirley Scoggins, his wife of 48 years; a father to Carly Scoggins and Harris Scoggins; and a grandfather to Savannah Renforth. He was a brother to Emily (Jerry) Worsham, Marvin (Linda) Scoggins, and Anna (Mike) Gianeskis, and a friend to many.
Howard faced life’s trials with strength — including the unimaginable loss of his daughter, Erin Nicole Scoggins, and grandson, Michael Laurence Renforth, who preceded him in death.
A family graveside service honoring Howard’s life will be held at 12 PM on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, 2853 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Suncoast Hospice Foundation in Howard’s memory.
