Jack J. La Russa, 89, of Clearwater, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to family, entrepreneurial spirit, and a life enriched by hard work, adventure, and cherished memories.
Born on November 30, 1936, in Manhattan, New York, Jack was the only child of the late Edna (née Gatti) and Vito La Russa.
Throughout his life, he carried with him a strong sense of determination, independence, and pride in all that he accomplished.
Jack’s professional journey reflected his intelligence, versatility, and entrepreneurial spirit. As a mechanical engineer and college professor of statistics, he combined technical expertise with a sharp analytical mind and a lifelong appreciation for knowledge. He also worked at the original Metropolitan Opera House in New York, adding a unique chapter to his diverse career.
Jack later became the founder and owner of N.J. International, a company specializing in model railroad parts. A savvy businessman with a keen understanding of his craft, he built the company through hard work, dedication, and resourcefulness. His professional accomplishments reflected not only his ingenuity and ambition but also his deep commitment to providing for those he loved.
Jack shared 58 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Catherine. Together, they embraced a life filled with travel, discovery, and unforgettable experiences. Each year, they looked forward to traveling to Nuremberg, Germany, to attend the International Toy Fair, combining Jack’s professional interests with their shared love of adventure. Their travels took them around the world, from Sicily to the Orient, creating treasured memories along the way.
Beyond traveling, Jack had a deep appreciation for opera and Formula 1 racing, interests that reflected his diverse tastes and zest for life. Whether enjoying the beauty and artistry of an opera or the excitement of motorsports, he found joy in experiences that inspired and captivated him. Above all, the adventures he shared with Catherine remained among life’s greatest treasures, enriching their 58 years together with lasting memories and a lifetime of love.
Above all else, family was the center of Jack’s world. He took great pride in being a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he measured his success not only by what he built in business, but by the family he provided for and loved so deeply. He believed in hard work, standing on one’s own two feet, and taking care of the people who mattered most.
Jack was a man who spoke his mind and lived by his own principles. Straightforward, honest, and never one to leave anyone guessing, he made sure you always knew where you stood with him. His strong personality, sharp business sense, and unmistakable candor were defining parts of who he was. When he wasn’t working or spending time with family, Jack enjoyed playing poker, where his confidence and keen instincts could shine.
Jack will be remembered for the life he built, the places he explored, the values he upheld, and, most importantly, the love he gave to his family. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the generations he leaves behind and in the countless memories shared by those fortunate enough to have known him.
