April 13, 1942 – February 23, 2026
Janet Schmidt Kirby, 83, of Palm Harbor, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, surrounded by music and her family’s love, while under the compassionate care of Suncoast Hospice.
Born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Fred W. Schmidt and Grace B. Schmidt. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Fred Schmidt, Jr. and Karl Schmidt, and her nephew, Bruce Schmidt.
Janet lived in Virginia and Washington, DC before making Clearwater, Florida her home, where she raised her family, built her career, grew in her Christian faith, and formed lasting friendships. She worked in healthcare and devoted more than 25 years of service to Morton Plant Hospital/BayCare Health System. She also spent nearly 20 years at Dillard’s, where she delighted in assisting shoppers, especially helping women find the perfect dress. When not working, she found joy in volunteering at Skycrest Community Church and with BayCare.
Janet’s life was defined by her love languages: service and gift-giving. Serving others came naturally to her, and her infectious smile and welcoming presence made everyone feel immediately at ease. Whether through a thoughtful gift, a helping hand, or simply her time and attention, she expressed her love in ways that made people feel truly seen and valued. Her warmth and kindness touched countless lives.
She is survived by her son, Arthur Kirby (Amy); daughter, Susan Mitchell (Scott); nephew, Glen Schmidt (Dawn); and her beloved grandsons, Jonah Mitchell and Robbie Kirby, who brought her immeasurable joy.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, March 8, at 2:00 p.m. at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Suncoast Hospice for their compassion and support during Janet’s final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Suncoast Hospice Foundation in Janet’s honor.
