Janice Goodman, 75, went to be with our Lord on Friday afternoon, May 18, 2018. She is survived by her daughters, Michelle Goodman, Christy Goodman and Dana (Goodman) Novak; granddaughters Falyn Snyder, Jordyn Snyder and Emily Novak; sister Mary Jo (Bateson) Malinowski; brother Wayne Bateson; and fiancé and love of her life, Gary Meade. She is predeceased by her parents, Floyd and Isabel Bateson, and sister Arlene (Bateson) Scalise.
Jan was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended Gateway High School in Monroeville, PA. She later graduated as a registered nurse from the West Penn School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. After being a stay at home mom for a few years, she went to work as a Recovery Room nurse at West Penn Hospital, where she made numerous lifelong friends, from fellow doctors to nursing staff.
Tired of the cold and snow, she decided to move with Gary and her daughters to Clearwater, Florida in 1988 to begin a new life in the Sunshine State (although she would remain a lifelong Steelers fan). She worked as a nurse at University General Hospital and Pinellas County Jail, before finding her true calling as “Nurse Jan” with Nina Harris Exceptional Student Education Center and Pinellas County Schools. She loved the students at Nina Harris as if they were her own children, mourning the loss of each child and holding on to mementos and cards from the students and parents over the years.
Jan was an amazing woman and maintained a sharp sense of humor until the end. She loved going to the beach, reading and baking special treats for her family, but unfortunately medical illnesses over the years robbed her of her passions. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her, but it’s comforting to know she is finally at peace.
The family would like to thank the staff at Stratford Court and Suncoast Hospice of Palm Harbor, especially Sandy and Bonnie, for their compassionate care of Jan in her final weeks.
A private ceremony for family members will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018, and in accordance with her wishes, Jan will be cremated and spend her eternal life at sea near Sanibel Island, one of her favorite places.
“It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
But I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings."
We love you mom.
