Jesse Charles Ogier Mathewes, Jr. (“Ogier”), of Clearwater, Florida, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on November 19, 1943, in Charleston, South Carolina, Ogier was the son of Jesse Charles Ogier Mathewes, Sr., and Hallie Elizabeth Mathewes. He spent his childhood in Charleston with his sister, Jesse Elizabeth Mathewes.
Ogier became the first member of his family to graduate college and in 1971 earned a master’s degree in accounting from the University of South Carolina that served as the foundation for a successful career in finance spanning more than 40 years. During his career, he worked for a number of international corporations including R.J. Reynolds, where he worked in corporate development leading the spin-off of SeaLand, the sale of Aminoil, and preparing the M&A white paper that would lead to the acquisition of Nabisco Brands in 1985. Among others, Ogier held senior positions at Del Monte Foods, MHI, Lowen Group and ultimately ended his career working for the State of Florida.
Ogier’s most cherished moment was realized on March 4, 1967, when he married his high school sweetheart Harriette Elaine Strock (“Elaine”). Ogier and Elaine celebrated over 57 years of marriage until Elaine’s passing on December 28, 2024. During their marriage, they raised four children: Jeffrey, Daniel, Alan, and Ashley. Despite a career that required extensive travel at times, Ogier instilled a strong work ethic in his children and spent time with his family when he was not traveling abroad. He was able to participate in coaching one of his son’s soccer teams, taking his daughter to the see The Nutcracker at Christmas time, as well as taking his family on several family trips ranging from Hawaii, skiing, and to Disney World. In his youth Ogier enjoyed playing the saxophone, and in his later life he was passionate about golf and college football. In golf, he was fortunate enough to hit a hole in one before he stopped playing in his late 60s. Unfortunately, the University of South Carolina was never able to to win a football national championship during his lifetime, but his children will be cheering on his Alma Mater in the years to come.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; his parents, Jesse Sr. and Hallie Mathewes; and his sister, Jesse Elizabeth Mathewes.
Ogier is survived by his children: Jeffrey (Kathleen Rettig) Mathewes, Daniel (Mildrey) Mathewes, Alan (Nicole Wiekierak) Mathewes, and Ashley (Christopher) Kein. Additionally, he leaves behind his eight grandchildren: Jeffrey and Kathleen’s four children - Vienna Mathewes, Sage Mathewes, Acacia Mathewes, and Cooper Mathewes; Daniel and Mildrey’s two children Austin Mathewes and Madison Mathewes; and Ashley and Chris’s two children Ella Kein and William Kein.
Ogier’s love for his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
The family requests that donations be made in Ogier’s memory to the SPCA or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, two causes that were important to him.
