John was born on November 2, 1926 to Theresa Dudasik and Konon Sherbuk in Mine Hill, New Jersey. He graduated from Dover High School and served in the Army and Navy.
After serving his country, he started his first job at New Jersey Power and Light as a Lineman, climbing up the tall poles in all kinds of weather, those big hands were able to carefully match and contain the delicate wires up there, but in all of his 97 years he still could never pronounce the word “aluminum”, and would always refer to it as “white wire”. He retired 43 years later as a Layout Technician.
In 1952 he married the love of his life, Dorothy Sceranko and moved to Rockaway, New Jersey.
They were members of Sacred Heart Church in Rockaway and became active parents when Sacred Heart School opened. He served as a volunteer in the Rockaway Fire Department and served as Chief of the Department in 1962. Many lifelong friendships were forged during those years. It was during this time he honed his skills at making clam chowder in a huge cast iron pot, over a crackling fire, a recipe passed down to his children and grandchildren. The summer picnics at 10 Chestnut Terrace were famous for chowder and great times.
After retiring, John and Dot moved to Florida, and all his children lived nearby. Their house was filled with the noise and activity of seven grandchildren, and those grandchildren provided him with 16 great-grandchildren. He enjoyed all of them until the very end. He was not able to be there for all of their lives, but they all will love and remember him for the rest of theirs.
He enjoyed spending time at the family bar, Two Buks, and looked forward to the football games and the crab races. Over the years he met many fascinating people there. As time passed scratch off tickets replaced the love of the one arm bandits, but no matter what method, he was always a lucky man.
John was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Wesley and Patrick, his sister Frieda, grandson Denis Rodimer, Jr. and granddaughter Victoria Sherbuk. He is survived by children, Theresa Rodimer (Denis), Stephen Sherbuk (Deb) and John Sherbuk (Madeline), grandchildren Daniel Rodimer (Sara), Christine Perez (Mikey), Wesley Sherbuk, Jacqueline Sherbuk-Gonzales (Carlos), Rebecca Cirrinicione (Peter), Lauren Anischko (Chris), Taryn Harrison, Jason Harrison-Kane (Karlen) and Sean Sykes. Great-grandchildren Mack, Reagan, Colum, Ella, Anna, Lucas, Nathaniel, Emma, Ridley, Colbie, Valentine, Violet, Ruby, Sylas, Attice, Bella, Sydney and Aoife, cousin Patricia Hric Castellini, and Godchildren Steve Ternosky, Francis John Rodimer and Jacqueline Heller.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church, 2281 State Road 580 Clearwater, Florida 33763. Interment will follow at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, 2860 Sunset Point Road Clearwater, Florida 33759.
