Lorna Landis

Lorna Schiavo Landis (December 17, 1927-December 2, 2022), passed away at the age of 94 in Palm Harbor, Florida, with her daughter by her side. She was an only child, born and raised in the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA, and graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls. She completed a Bachelors degree in Biology from West Chester State Teachers College (now University). She met Robert (Bob) Mitchell Landis (1925-2009) on the first day of school and they were together ever since. Both she and Bob spent their public education careers in the Haverford Township School District and loved living in the Coopertown neighborhood of Bryn Mawr, PA, before retiring to Florida. She was a respected teacher, a news junkie, a feminist, a science geek, an avid shopper, and loved dark chocolate, pizza, and Masterpiece Theater. She was a bridge player and an armchair traveller who finally got a passport to visit Italy at the age of 80. She wore glasses from the age of three and was a voracious reader of the daily newspaper and crime mysteries. She could knit a sweater without looking, although perhaps she should have. She was deeply committed to community service which led her to volunteer in myriad ways including at the local state hospital and library. She supported numerous progressive social causes, but was especially proud of the orphaned elephant she sponsored after a trip to Kenya. She made her bed without fail every single day and threw the best birthday parties. She was a compassionate friend and natural leader who was elected to a variety of positions, including President of the Residents Association at St. Mark Village Assisted Living, where she lived for 14 years. Lorna was predeceased by her husband, and her parents, Samuel and Anna (Cohen) Schiavo. She is survived, and missed terribly, by her daughter, Robin Landis and son-in-law Jeffrey Marzilli.
