Martha "Joy" Simpson

Joy was born to Roscoe and Myrtle Nobles and raised in Pensacola, where she graduated from Pensacola High School in 1961. She studied cosmetology during high school and continued her training at Pensacola Junior College, later passing the Florida state board examination in cosmetology.

Joy fell in love with her soulmate, Troy Eugene Simpson, a pilot in the United States Navy. They married on April 19, 1963, and shared 55 years of marriage. As a Navy officer’s wife, Joy lovingly supported Troy throughout his military career while raising their family. Their life together took them to duty stations across the United States and to Gaeta, Italy.

Throughout her life, Joy wore many hats, including cosmetologist, hula instructor, Girl Scout leader, gymnastics coach, florist, Sunday school teacher, children’s music director, Vacation Bible School leader, church choir member, and Weight Watchers instructor. She was a fabulous cook, loved the beach, and collected seashells from her many travels.

Joy is survived by her three daughters, Angela Nimmo (Paul), Heather Simpson (Dan Hansen), and Dena Brooks (Robert); her sister, Carol Sagebiel; nine grandchildren, Regan, Rebecca, Bella, Maddy, Isaac, Greyson, Alex, Lilli, and Delaney; and two great-granddaughters, Eliza and Julia.

Above all, Joy loved her family fiercely and wholeheartedly. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and was affectionately known as “Nona” to her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who loved her. They take comfort in knowing that she is reunited with the love of her life, Troy, who preceded her in death on May 10, 2018.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 2853 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, Florida 33759, on November 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

A private family interment will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery, where Joy will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Troy.
