Michael John COLITZ Jr.
February 2, 1940 – April 3, 2021
COLITZ, Michael John Jr. "Mike" son of Michael John Colitz Sr. and Olga Matonis, peacefully passed into eternal life April 3, 2021 at the age of 81 with his son Michael by his side, in Palm Harbor, FL. Mike was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania February 2, 1940. He attended Nativity BVM High School in Pottsville and then entered the University of Notre Dame where he received a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1961. He studied law at American University in Washington DC and graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1965. Mike went on to practice patent law at Xerox in California and BF Goodrich in Ohio before starting his own law firm in Largo, FL. Mike wrote over 10,000 patents during his career. He especially appreciated the creativity and ingenuity of individual inventors and was their strongest advocate. As a hobby, he researched unique and humorous patents and featured them on his website Wacky Patents. He also loved animals. He said that his next profession was to help with the patients at his sister and brother-in-law's veterinary hospital. Mike was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Jude Colitz. He is survived by his sister, Carmen; daughters, Jennifer and Laura; son, Michael; and by his seven grandchildren, Holly, Mackenzie, William, Grace, Cecilia, Laurel, and Emma. Mike loved his family, Catholic faith and everything about the University of Notre Dame, especially the football team. His passion for Notre Dame was most apparent when he returned to campus to pray at the Grotto, attend mass at the Basilica, and cheer in the football stadium. We will miss his smile, laugh, and wonderful sense of humor. He was a gentle, kind man with a sharp mind and a never-ending supply of knowledge and trivia. Mass will be held 1:30pm on April 22nd, 2021, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, 820 Jasmine Way, Clearwater, FL 33756.

Mr. Colitz was my patent attorney and became a very good friend of my family and I. It was a pleasure spending time with him when he visited us in New York City. He will be greatly missed and remembered by the Vastag family.
