
Rachel Chawk Hood, a true Steel Magnolia lady who was devoted to her family, died January 2, 2019. A native of Glasgow, Ky. “Hoppy,’’ as she was nicknamed by her dad, studied pre med and graduated from Vanderbilt University. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE, serving in World War II. Rachel married Thomas W. Chawk and had four sons. She was suddenly widowed and devoted formidable strength to raising her children alone. She was a registered medical technologist and later taught at Dunedin High School. She was a member of the Dunedin Country Club. Mrs. Hood was a lifelong music lover, having played the violin. Survivors include three sons: Thomas Joel Chawk, (Sandi), David Chawk, (David Newcombe), Terry Chawk, daughter-in-law Bev Chawk, grandchildren, Joel and Matthew Chawk. Mrs. Hood was predeceased by her parents, Joel and Cordelia Gillenwater, husbands Thomas W. Chawk, Col. David Hood, her son, Gary Chawk.
