Richard Allen Redmond

Richard was born on December 5, 1932, in Lima, Ohio, to John Calvin Redmond and Agnes L. Stout. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Indiana Institute of Technology and built a distinguished career as a software engineer. His career included work with Sperry, Collins Radio, General Electric, Honeywell, Paradyne, and other engineering projects in the United States and abroad. One of his proudest professional accomplishments was serving on the Kennedy Space Center Government–Industry team that helped launch Apollo 11, the mission that successfully put the first men on the moon in 1969.

Richard proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He served in the Signal Corps, spending one year in Japan between 1952 and 1954, attained the rank of corporal, and was honorably discharged. His military honors included the Korean Service Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Korean War Service Medal.

Richard met the love of his life, Barbara Jo Gossard, at church when she was 14 and he was 16. He fell for her and later convinced her to marry him when she was 20 and graduating from St. Rita’s School of Nursing. They married on July 20, 1956, and shared 70 years of marriage. In Richard’s own words, it was the “smartest thing ever done.”

As a Christian man of faith, he was trustworthy, reliable and “knew where he was going”. Richard approached life with curiosity and a true sense of adventure. He loved his 38 years as a football referee and was a longtime member of the Florida High School Athletic Association. During those years, he officiated at least 300 Friday night high school football games. His love of officiating continued well into his later years and also included youth football and girls flag football.

Richard also enjoyed scuba diving, camping, world travel, photography, and music. He loved attending fairs, carnivals, art shows, music festivals, and nearly any event that gave him a reason to get out and experience something new. He made it his goal to leave the house and do something every day, creating a life filled with experiences, stories, and treasured memories.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes; his brother, John Redmond; and his son, Timothy Allen Redmond.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Jo Redmond; his children, Tracy Ann Thompson (Thomas), Todd Andrew Redmond (Patricia), and Terrence Alexander Redmond; his grandchildren, Roshelle Marshall (Dan), Briana Carr (Tom), Zachary Thompson, and Zoe Thompson; and his great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Leif, Teddy, Callum, and Forrest.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
