He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Vietnam, carrying both the weight and the honor of that service throughout his life. His discipline and resilience were matched only by his warmth and generosity.
He found freedom in flying; the sky was his happy place. He always enjoyed a round of golf or dinner with family and good friends. He enjoyed the outdoors and great family picnics in the park. He practiced Karate and Tai Chi, embracing the balance, strength, and mindfulness they brought him.
Above all, he loved his family. He leaves behind his devoted wife Linda, his daughter Amy Macdonald and son Steve Hartford, his five grandchildren Kaiane, Rolyn, Cordelia, Maretta, and Eleanor. He is also survived by his sister Sue Miranda and her husband Jose, and his brother Harold Hartford and his wife Nylah and brother-in-law Bill Faist.
He will be remembered for his steady presence, his wild stories about growing up in the hills of Appalachia, his goofy sense of humor and the way he made life brighter for everyone lucky enough to know him.
