She was born in Takoma Park, MD on September 13, 1942 to E. Dudley and Rose Nugent Weidemeyer. She moved with her parents to Florida at the age of 2 and enjoyed a storybook childhood in Clearwater.
After high school Ree went to Florida State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies Education in April 1964. She stayed at FSU and earned her Masters’ Degree in Social Studies Education in 1965. Ree joined the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority in her Freshman year at FSU and maintained lifelong friendships with her sorority sisters. Ree was also a lifelong ardent fan of FSU football.
Ree began her teaching career in 1965 in Sarasota County, then spent a year in 1971-72 in Bermuda teaching at the US Naval Air Station. She was a member of the Teachers Union of the Sarasota County Board of Education and served as its President until early 1981. Ree combined her love of history and adventure by traveling overseas prior to meeting the love of her life, Glenn Edward Tanner Sr., who she married in February 1978. Together Ree and Glenn continued to feed their travel bug with a sailboat and later an RV. Sadly they parted too soon upon Glenn’s death in 2007.
Ree, the baby of her family, was always the life of the party – with her guitar and organizing sing-alongs; the documentarian for the family – always with a camera or video camera in her hand; and the historian for the family – with the research and creation of our ancestral family tree. She leaves a huge hole in our family heart.
Ree was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her two older sisters. She is survived by her sons, Brian and Chris Tanner, her grandchildren – Cressida, Glenn III, and Jira, much loved nieces, nephews and cousins, and many lifelong friends.
A graveside service for Rose Marie will be held at 11am on Saturday, October 14, 2023 Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, 2860 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, FL 33759. There will be a reception to follow Ree's service at:
