BRITTON, Sandra Kathleen Elizabeth, 71, of Clearwater Beach, Florida, passed away February 10, 2019 surrounded by her family. Sandy was born April 2, 1947 in Mtarfa, Malta to the late Lieutenant Commander Jack Harold and Mary Joan (Said) Nicholas. She left home in Malta at 16 years old on a full academic scholarship to the prestigious Slade School of Art, London. She went on to achieve her International Beautician A-Level Diploma, which allowed her the opportunity to open the first beautician salon in Malta, inside the Hilton. Sandy then went on later to be a successful dress designer with her own studio and clothing range, "Sandy Gandy". Her studio was based in Holland Park Avenue and she sold her designs throughout the 70’s in Kensington Market and the world-famous fashion store Biba in London, England, UK.
Sandy was a member of the Clearwater Beach Association, 1995-2019 and the Clearwater Chamber of Commerce. She volunteered for Sue Ryder Charity Shop in London for many years. Sandy was also a volunteer for the Pinellas County School System, a stay at home mum who raised 3 amazing children, was a strong family advocate and leader against neighborhood short term rentals, supported the development of a community library, pool, and two successful roundabouts on Clearwater Beach. Sandy was also officially named Mrs. Clearwater Beach, granted a U.S. Citizenship. Sandy successfully fought Lung Cancer for over 5 years.
Sandy is survived by her loving husband; Jack Britton of Clearwater Beach, Florida, brother; John Nicholas of Malta, daughter; Lisa Dawn Rawson of Cirencester, England UK, sons; John Nicholas Britton of Tampa, Florida, USA, and James Christopher Britton of Sydney, Australia and grandchildren; Jake Knowlton Rawson, and Isabella Alexandra Rawson, both of Cirencester, England, UK.
A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held Saturday, February 16, 2019 from 12 until 3 PM in Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home, Grand Oaks Hall with a prayer service held at 12:30PM. The family requests donations be made to Moffit Cancer Center or Suncoast Hospice Foundation in memory of Sandra Britton.
