Thomas J. Barry

Thomas J Barry died peacefully on August 9, 2019 at Brookdale Countryside assisted living where he has been living since his wife, Jane passed away in 2016. They were married for 71 years! Tom was the son of James P. Barry and Elizabeth Gerber Barry and he was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on October 15, 1923. Tom worked for the United States Postal Service and retired to Florida and lived in Clearwater for over 50 years. Tom was the leader of the Popular Suncoast String Band for over 20 years and they played many charity events in the Clearwater area. Tom loved music and played several instrument’s. He'd often sing with the band some of the old favorites from the 1940's and 1950's. He was a disabled Army Veteran of WWII and received a Purple Heart for his service in 1944 while serving under George S. Patton and the 3rd Army attached to the 80th infantry division. He was a gunner assigned to the 702 Tank Bn (Red Devils) and was injured in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. Tom and his wife Jane traveled for 35 years to various locations throughout United States to attend his company’s Army reunions to honor and pray for his fallen brothers. Tom was very much in love with his wife, Jane, family, friends and country. Friends and Family are welcome to join us for his Life Well Celebrated event, which will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2019 from 10 am to 12 pm at: Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home 2853 Sunset Point Rd. Clearwater, Florida 33759 (727) 796-1992. Burial will be at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL at 2:30 pm following the Life Well Celebrated event at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home.
