He worked for the Navy after the war until 1955 and moved to NASA, working on the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. He later worked for the Department of Transport to research congestion and traffic safety, his team worked on the technology which was to become GPS.
He retired from the DoT as Chief of Traffic and joined the University of Maryland as visiting professor, teaching Traffic Flow theory.
He wanted to reconnect with his European heritage, so he moved to London in 1983. He learned bridge which was to become a lifelong passion. He wished to explore the world of music and art, so he took a year-long class to study the History of Fine Art at the weekends, it was here that he met Margaret. After a nine-year courtship they married in Clearwater in 1994 and moved to Florida. Bill had a love of Bavaria, and he and Margaret went there regularly. They made many life-long friends playing bridge.
In Florida Bill did tax volunteer work for over 10 years with the IRS and AARP. Bill and Margaret played a great deal of bridge, tennis, and they took many cruises.
During their 30 years together Margaret and Bill have enjoyed spending time with the family. Bill had two children, Arthur and Diane, from a previous marriage. Arthur has two children, Lauren and Jonathan. This year Lauren and John had Bill’s great grandson Blake, just in time for Bill’s 100th birthday! Diane has a son, Scott.
Margaret has two children Luke and James, both of whom have spent a lot of time with them. Luke and Claire have two daughters, Kaitlin and Holly, all of whom spent time with Margaret and Bill.
Bill and Margaret have loved living in Florida, and they have felt so welcome here.
