

After a full and glorious life of 95 years, Mrs. Alice M. Punger joined her husband, Howard W. Punger, in paradise on October 25 2014. She was born May 3, 1919 in Brooklyn, NY. Her parents, William and Katherine Pflugfelder, immigrated to America from Germany in the early 1900’s. Mrs. Punger was the youngest of five siblings and the last to join her brothers and sisters in Heaven.
Mrs. Punger went through rapid advance and graduated high school at 16 during the throes of the Great Depression. She met her future husband in high school and married him 4 years later. Alice enjoyed her life as a wife and mother and was proud of her working years - four years with Blue Cross/Blue Shield in NYC before she married and another dozen or so years for Belwyn Music publishers after her children left the nest.
While Howard served his country during WWII, Alice made a home for the first two of their four children in Brooklyn. NY. In the early 1950’s they settled in East Rockaway, L. I., New York where she raised her four children with love, compassion and abounding support.. She was active in her church, PTA, the Eastern Star and community. She started a bridge club that lasted 20 years. She was a scout leader for at least a decade and served on the Board of Education of the East Rockaway public schools. Alice enjoyed expanding her knowledge by taking adult classes at Malloy College in Rockville Center, NY.
Upon Howard’s retirement in 1979, Alice and Howard moved to Winston-Salem to be near their children and to enjoy the southern climate. Their home on the Wedgwood golf course was a warm and welcoming home for family and friends. She was a member of the Bethania Moravian Church for many years and later joined the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany where she was active in the Mary Martha Women's Circle of the Church. She also was a member of the Wedgewood Woman's Club.
She is survived by: daughter, Elaine Dana and her husband, David, of Whitfield, NH,
daughter; Susan Pester of Pfafftown, NC (widow of Charles Pester), son, Douglas S. Punger and his wife, Leila, of Winston-Salem, NC and their children: D. Stuart Punger and his wife, Kally, of Winston-Salem, NC; Alexander B. Punger and his fiancé, Meera, of New York City, NY, Gregg C. Punger and his wife, Elizabeth, of Raleigh, NC; daughter, Beverly J. Bartolomie and her husband, Harry, of Sparks, NV and Beverly's children: Danielle Agnew and her husband, Josh of Montgomery, TX, Alicia McKenney of Bozeman, MT and Heather McKenney of Bozeman, MT. She also is survived by five great grandchildren: Dean, Margaret and Heath Punger, the children of Stuart and Kally Punger and Keller and Timothy James, the children of Danielle and Josh Agnew.
