February 27, 1950 – February 15, 2015
Anne Burckhardt Clauss, age 64, passed away Sunday, February 15, at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital surrounded by her loving family, after a determined struggle against lung cancer. Anne was born in Atlanta, February 27, 1950 to John and Mary Ann Burckhardt. From infancy, she was reared by Carl and Mary Ann Burckhardt Blair. She was preceded in her death by her father John, stepfather Carl and brother Buddy.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Errol M. Clauss, her mother, Mary Ann Blair, her sisters Sissy (Paul) Will and Edie (Dan) Fink and brother Chris. In addition, she is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth (Eric) Routh, Lauren Clauss (Mitchell), and Kate as well as stepdaughters Cam (Tom) Brown, Lorre (Jim) Ruffin, Eanne (John) Gillon, Lesley (Danny) Billow, Mallory Clauss and Alden Clauss. There are also twelve step grandchildren.
Anne was a graduate of Salem College, holding a B.A. in Psychology, an M.Ed. in Literacy and was a National Board Certified Teacher. She taught in the WS/FC school system for 34 years, first at Forest Park Elementary and for a longer period at Rural Hall Elementary School.
Anne will be remembered as a woman who loved advocating for children who were not being served adequately by the schools or their parents. She still received mail from grown men and women whose lives were changed by her love, patience, sympathy and professionalism. She stood out in a crowd of educators. Her love of her children knew no limits and her friendship with others was warm, sincere, and deep. Anne loved the beach (with family, friends and shell collecting) in the summer and mountains in the fall. She will be missed, but remembered by many.
In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to Rural Hall Elementary School or the American Cancer Society. A commemoration of Anne’s life will take place at Frank Vogler and Sons Funeral Home Clemmons Chapel on Saturday, February 28 at 2:00.
