Betty Lou Hicks Peel Williams was born on April 29, 1930 in Forsyth County to Joseph Luther Hicks and Lelia Ann Lashmit. She died on August 9, 2015 in her home in Lewisville with the sounds of her family’s love playing in the background.
She’s preceded in death by her husband Earlie (Tom) William Peel, her parents, six brothers, one sister and one grand-daughter. In life, Betty was strong-willed and determined.
As a single mother, Betty worked full-time at R.J. Reynolds in Quality Control while raising her three kids. Although she may have been a mother to only three, throughout her life Betty was an adopted mother to many. Betty grew up in Lewisville, North Carolina. She retired from R.J.R. in 1987 and once her children were grown and with children of their own, she moved to Holden Beach, North Carolina, where she spent many years basking in the sun, cleaning houses, and enjoying the family visits. In her younger days she had a passion for water-skiing. The love for the ocean and beach stayed with her until her death. Family and friends will say they never saw Betty without a mug of black coffee, freshly painted nails and a flawless hairstyle. Her house always smelled clean, her carpet kept with crisp, vacuumed rows, and beds made with ironed sheets. She found pleasure in cooking home-cooked meals and opened her home with welcoming arms to all. Her family is comforted knowing she has been reunited with her Lord and Savior
Betty is survived by her son, Earlie (Tommy) William Peel, Jr.; her daughters, Joyce Ann Swing and Debra Lynn Yale; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, and many special nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 10 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons, North Carolina. Funeral services will also be held at Vogler & Sons the following afternoon, Tuesday, August 11 at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow the services at Woodland Cemetery in Winston-Salem. Everyone who knew Betty knows her love of flowers, however, donations will also be accepted. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Rowan Hospice & Palliative Care Center.
