Dr. Stamey was a member and Deacon of Knollwood Baptist Church and an advocate of “living abundantly.” He loved to go to the beach at every opportunity. Tennis and running were favorite activities, and he cherished playing classical music and the Great American Songbook on the piano. He was an avid reader, grew many vegetables and flowers, and treasured time riding his palomino horse, Phantasy.
Dr. Stamey is survived by his wife, Margaret Harrill Stamey, of Winston-Salem; by three children, Chris Stamey and wife, Dana, of Chapel Hill; Cindy Adair, of Puerto Rico; and Kent Stamey and wife, Susan, of Greensboro; and by six grandchildren: Julia Stamey, Chapel Hill; Tess Adair, Garden Grove, CA; Cass Adair, Ann Arbor, MI; Quinton Adair, Virginia Beach, VA; Katie Stamey, Atlanta, GA; and Claire Stamey, Greensboro.
He believed that “Earth's crammed with Heaven / and every common bush afire with God; / But only he who sees, takes off his shoes, / The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries” (Elizabeth Barrett Browning). Another favorite was “Work is not a four letter word.”
His own words summarize his personal philosophy: “Love is the greatest, Fear is the worst; Happiness is now” (Charles Stamey).
