Franklin Mathis

Winston-Salem- Mr. Franklin Mathis, 80, died Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Trinity Glen Nursing Home. He had fought a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia disease. A memorial service will be held on July 25, 2012 at 11 AM at West Side Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Dixon officiating and Pastors Clark Vincent and Arnett Harris assisting. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will take place at Cranberry Baptist Church in Wilkes County at 2 PM following the service.

Franklin was born in Wilkes County to the late Chester and Knoba Sales Mathis. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Patrick E. Mathis; and sisters, Pauline M. Adams and Aralee M. Wooten. Mr. Mathis was a lifetime member of Cranberry Baptist Church and attended West Side Baptist Church. He graduated from Lewisville High School in 1950 and served in the US Army stateside and in Germany from 1957-1961. His employment includes Ace Motor Company in Honolulu, HI, Western Electric Company, Wilson Motor Company, Froelich Cadillac and owner of Frank Mathis Wholesale, Inc., all in Winston-Salem. He enjoyed golfing and loved to tend to his yard which garnered many compliments from his neighbors, but his true passions was buying, selling and evaluating used cars. He was faithful to his exercise regimen whether he was walking his three Pekinese dogs or working out at the Jerry Long YMCA in Clemmons.

Surviving Mr. Mathis are his wife of 57 years, Ruth Scott Mathis, several nieces and nephew great nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Kay Mathis of TX.

Mrs. Mathis would like to extend her gratitude to the staffs of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home and Trinity Glen Nursing Home for their compassion shown Mr. Mathis during his illness.
