

Mrs. Genevieve Mawhinney Bott died June 22, 2010 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, Winston-Salem, NC. Mrs. Bott was born January 23, 1918 to Daniel and Genevieve (McGrath) Mawhinney in Philadelphia, Pa. On September 20, 1942 she married William Jesse Bott. They celebrated 54 years of marriage before his death in 1996.
Mrs. Bott graduated from Immaculata College. Philadelphia, PA, with a degree in chemistry. She taught high school chemistry at Philadelphia Public Schools before being recruited by the Gage Laboratories during World War II. The family lived in Pennsylvania, California, Maryland, Illinois, and Georgia before Major Bott retired from the Marine Corps to work for Western Electric when they moved to Winston-Salem in 1960. Mrs. Bott taught reading at Our Lady of Mercy School for several years. She was a member of St. Leo the Great Parish for over 50 years.
Mrs. Bott is survived by her four children: William J. Bott, Jr of Naples, FL; Joan Bott Hodapp and husband, Al, (Mason City, IA); James G. Bott (Yadkinville, NC); and Frances Bott Sletten and husband, Rod, (Lexington, NC) as well as six grandchildren: Kristin Hodapp Lavery and husband, Eric (San Diego, CA), Ben Hodapp (New Haven, CT), Matthew Sletten (Greensboro, NC), Carrie Sletten (Waterloo, IA), Daniel Sletten (Charlotte, NC), and Jessie Sletten (Lexington, NC). She is also survived by her beloved sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Sil Puglielli (Myrtle Beach, SC); 4 nieces and 4 nephews, including Teresa Rose and family (Miami, FL), Joseph Puglielli and family (Whitefish, MT), Maryann Puglielli (Alexandria, VA), and Bob Van Leer and family (Miami, FL). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jesse, her brother, Robert Mawhinney, and cherished sister, Rose Van Leer.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday (7/29) 11:00 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 335 Springdale Avenue, Winston-Salem 27104 (336-724-0561) with entombment to follow in the church columbarium. Family and friends will gather for a luncheon at the church, following the entombment.
