Born March 30, 1926 to Angelo and Fotika Ballus from Turkey, she grew up in one of the first Greek communities in Winston-Salem.
She graduated from Reynolds High School in 1943 and worked for the Civil Service before her marriage in 1949. Her childhood Greek friends stayed close and met every month for many, many years as long as they were able.
The Depperschmidt family was one of the founding members of Our Lady Mercy Catholic Church where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She retired from the City of Winston-Salem in 1990.
She and her husband enjoyed going to yard sales and flea markets during their retirement.
She loved everyone and everyone loved her.
Georgia was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 63 years, Ralph Depperschmidt, two brothers, Gus and Paul Ballus and a special sister-in-law Jane Ballus and brother-in-law, Sam Mellos. She is survived by a sister Helen Mellos of Sale Lake City, Utah and seven children, Linda Phelps (Ronnie), Robert Depperschmidt (Maria), Yvonne Depperschmidt (Steve), Wanda Sigmon (Bill), Perry Depperschmidt (JoAnn), of Mechanicsville, MD, Donna Berry (Pierre) of Crossville, TN and John Depperschmidt. She has 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
The family would like to thank all the nurses and CNA’s at Salemtowne Retirement Community for the exceptional care they provided our mom. A special thanks to her nurse Amy who was with her from the beginning and loved her like family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Salemtowne Retirement Community’s Team Member Appreciation Fund or Alzheimer’s Association. A funeral Mass will be held Friday June 29 at 11:00am at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home will be assisting the family.
