

Mrs. Harriette Bullard McCormick of Winston-Salem, died December 23, 2010 at her residence. She was born in Nashville, Georgia to Mattie Tygart and Adrian E. Bullard on January 26, 1916. She attended public schools in Nashville and graduated from Georgia State Women’s College (now Valdosta State University) in 1936 with an A.B. degree in education. Mrs. McCormick began her teaching career in North Carolina in 1936. She taught ten years in Rowland, NC, and six years in Dillon, SC. On December 23, 1940, she married Hal McCormick of Rowland, NC. They moved to Winston-Salem in 1952, where she taught in Winston-Salem Forsyth Schools for 26 years, and was active in national, regional, state, and local educational organizations. In 1972 she was awarded a Reynolds scholarship where she studied for one summer at Sofia University in Tokyo. In 1975 Governor Holshouser appointed her for a term on the NC State Textbook Commission. She retired in 1978 and pursued her hobbies of cooking, gardening, and writing. She published two volumes of poetry – A Look Back and A Look Ahead. She was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, where she taught the Susanna Wesley Sunday School class for many years. She was involved in several church activities, including secretary of the church board for 40 years and was also on two building committees. She wrote tributes to friends for birthdays, weddings, retirement, anniversaries, and other special occasions. She was preceded in death by her husband Hal McCormick, and brother and two sisters: Robert, Carolyn and Margaret Bullard. After an accident in 2005, her activities were limited, at which time she invited her adopted daughter Zoraida Jaen of Panama and her husband Henry Solis to live with her. They have shown her love, as well as provided excellent care. She is also survived by her niece Rebecca Powers and husband Ed of Shreveport, LA, and their three children Andrea Maxfield (husband Scott and son Zachary) of Greenville, SC, and Teresa Powers of Donalds, SC, and Robert Powers (wife Shatha) of Chicago, IL. She is grateful for the excellent medical care she has received and would like to express her appreciation to Dr. A. Stanley Link, her primary physician. The family would also like to thank Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Winston-Salem for their outstanding services. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church.
