

Jesse Earl Powell, Jr., died early Saturday morning, June 5, 2010 at 5 a.m. at NC Baptist Hospital. He'd been seriously ill and had been in the intermediate care unit for three days. The hospital staff employees were all extremely kind and helpful to all his family. Jesse was born September 9, 1929 in Winston-Salem to his father, Jesse Earl Powell, Sr., and his mother, Maggie Holder Powell. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Eleanor Cofer Powell; by his daughter, Donna Powell Bryant, her husband, David Leonard Bryant, and his grandson, Nicholas Powell Bryant. His granddaughter, Abigail Elizabeth Bryant passed away two and a half years ago at the age of twenty-five. His daughter, Cheryl Lynne Powell died in the year 2000. He is also preceded in death by his half-brother, Wesley Stone and half-sister, Elva Hartley. His wonderful home health care provider of three and one half years has been Elly Ibrahim, who has become a much loved friend of all the family. Janice Glenn was another loving health care provider for Jesse. Jesse was an extremely amiable man who made many friends wherever he went. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend and was much loved and admired by everyone whoever knew him. Jesse was retired after having worked at Reynolds Tobacco Company for nineteen years, at Fife Corporation for twenty years and Coldwell Banker for four years. He left Coldwell Banker, which was because of failing eyesight, which was attributed to his diabetes. Jesse's family asks that contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association , in his name. There will be a Memorial Service held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, at Maple Springs Methodist Church on Reynolda Road. Jesse will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Eleanor, and by his daughter, Donna; his son-in-law, David; his grandson, Nicholas and girlfriend, Bobbie Lynn (Brandy); and by his many friends and all who knew him.
