
A long-time resident of Winston-Salem, NC, Kathryn was born September 3, 1918 in Salisbury, NC to her parents Oscar Arthur McCall and Lillie Gertrude Johnson, both deceased. She graduated in 1936 from Boyden High School, Salisbury.
In 1940 she married Arnold Silas Deal. They were married for 65 years until his death in 2005. In the early years of their marriage, she travelled with her husband during a portion of the five years he served in the US Army Air Corps until he was deployed overseas. She returned to Winston-Salem and, upon his return to the US, they established their permanent residence there. Kathryn and Arnold enjoyed travelling both stateside and internationally. She often joined Arnold in his passion for fishing and target shooting.
She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and previously First Presbyterian Church, Winston-Salem. Both she and Arnold participated in a variety of church activities including youth programs, ushering and visitation to senior members.
Kathryn enjoyed volunteering for several organizations including Meals On Wheels, the Toy Shop, and the Gray Ladies of Baptist Hospital. She continued her volunteer efforts when she and her husband relocated from their home in Sherwood Forest, Winston-Salem to Bermuda Village, Advance, NC, in 1995. There she shared her knitting talents with her friends making small caps for premature babies and prayer shawls for cancer patients. She will be remembered for her laughter, love of visiting and sharing meals with friends, and compassion for others.
Her brother Oscar Albert McCall and sister Margaret Elizabeth McCall preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Martha McCall Boring of Charlotte, NC; nieces, Pamela Boring Cain (Robert) of Mt. Holly, NC and Patricia Boring Carter (Rev. Thomas) of Baltimore, MD; and nephew, Fredrick McCall Boring of Charlotte, NC. Her nephew by marriage, James M. Monroe, Jr. and wife Dot of Concord, NC and cousin, Elizabeth Warner of Advance, NC provided special care for her during her later years.
The family would like to thank her physician, Dr. Sherrill Braswell and staff and the staffs at Bermuda Village Catered Living and Greystone Cottage for the many kindnesses afforded Kathyrn.
Services will be at 2 PM, Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Centenary United Methodist Church Chapel with the Reverend Craig Ford officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
