MARTIN WINSTON-SALEM – Mr. Kedric Ewing Martin, 89, a resident of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, passed away September 21, 2013, from complications of COPD and heart failure. He was born in East Bend, NC to the late Dr. Richard Early Martin and Ruth Ewing Martin on February 8, 1924. He graduated from East Bend School, then served in the United States Navy during World War II. Following the service, he worked at Atlas Supply Company, Ferguson Enterprises, and retired from Murray Supply Company, all in Winston-Salem. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife of 60 years Frances Sigman Martin, and by his older brother, Richard E. Martin, Jr.
Mr. Martin was a life-long member of Northwest Baptist Church, where he served as a long-time greeter and usher, as well as deacon. He also took joy in belonging to the Winston-Salem Rose Society, exhibiting roses at the fair and rose shows, while winning many awards and ribbons along the way. Mr. Martin delighted in his long-time friendships, growing roses and sharing them with shut-ins and neighbors, vegetable gardening and canning, and caring for his dearly-departed dog Haley. Above all, he relished spending quality time with his extended family, especially taking their pictures and enjoying their photographs on his computer while sharing many via email.
Mr. Martin is survived by his twin brother, Kenneth Marion ("Denny") Martin, also a resident of Arbor Acres; and by his two children, daughter, Susan Martin Barber, of Boone, NC, and her husband, Art; son, Keith Monroe Martin, of Charlotte, NC, and his wife, Beth; granddaughter, Jamie Ruth Durham, of Boone, NC, and her husband, Wayne, and three great-granddaughters, Katie Ruth Durham, Mattie Susan Durham, and Caroline Frances Durham; and grandson, Brandon Arthur Barber, of Charleston, SC, his wife, Stacie, and great-granddaughter, Haven Marley Barber.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the kind staff and members of Northwest Baptist Church and staff and fellow residents of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community for their compassionate friendship and care during Mr. Martin’s illness. Memorial donations may be made to Northwest Baptist Church or to Arbor Acres.
