Margaret Royster Corby

Peggie Royster Jones Corby, 92, a resident of Mallard Ridge Assisted Living, passed away on April 13, 2014, Palm Sunday after a lengthy period of declining health. She was born in Pacolet, South Carolina on November 3, 1921 and grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was a resident of the Ardmore Community in Winston-Salem for over sixty years. Mrs. Corby studied organ at Women's College in Greensboro, NC (now the University of NC at Greensboro) and graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh in 1942 with a degree in music and piano. Her first job was teaching piano at the NC School for the Deaf and Blind. She went on to teach piano and organ lessons and was devoted to her students as well as to her work as an organist. She was the organist at Memorial Methodist Church in Thomasville for many years. Mrs. Corby was very active in the Winston-Salem community and was a life-long member of the Woman's Club of Winston-Salem, the Thursday Morning Music Club of Winston-Salem, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Daughters of American Confederacy. She also loved sharing her time volunteering with her church, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and with her friends at the Shepherd's Center. Peggie Corby is pre-deceased by her brother, Adam Crane Jones Jr., and is survived by nieces, Janey House of Greenville, SC, Peggy Roland of Augusta, Ga., and Jacky Starnes of Jacksonville, Florida; her nephew, Adam Crane Jones III; seven great nieces and nephews; five great, great nephews; and two honorary daughters, Jane Leonard and Julia Floyd. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 25th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit St., Winston-Salem with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the student scholarship fund for the Thursday Morning Music Club and sent to Phebe Kirkman, 101 Brampton Court, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
