Mary Margaret Jones Harper was born on January 3, 1921, a day so windy that the
snow sifted in through cracks in the wall of the house where she was born on Styers
Ferry Rd. between Lewisville and Clemmons. She was the ninth of twelve children born
to Anna Willis Smith Jones and William Henry Monroe Jones, and she lived almost all of
her life less than half a mile from the house where she was born. She died on the
morning of January 10, as the snow fell peacefully, just 7 days after her 90th birthday.
Margaret attended elementary and high school at Lewisville School and graduated in
the class of 1939. She loved to read and enjoyed being referred to as “the reader” at
Clemmons Village II until her health declined during the last year. She loved her family
and with much pride shared the activities and accomplishments of their lives with all
who visited with her.
She married Andrew Blaine Harper Jr. on April 20, 1946 and celebrated 56 years of
marriage with him. They raised two children, cared for five grandchildren and had five
great grandchildren to love. Margaret cared for A. B. during the years when he suffered
from Alzheimer’s and held memories of their life together, their travels, their close
church family, the close community of brothers and sisters and the love that encircled
those family and friends.
Margaret was an active member of Concord United Methodist Church from early
childhood, and remembers walking the mile from her childhood home to church without
her shoes so that she could keep her shoes clean. Even when she could no longer
attend services and events, she kept in touch with church members and enjoyed visits
from them. Margaret taught Sunday School, was active in Women’s Society and shared
her wonderful cooking talent with the church community.
Margaret and her sister Lucile spent many winter days making the quilts that reflect
family stories and keep their families warm.
Margaret worked at Hanes Knitting Company for 28 years, and always counted
coworkers as her good friends. She loved growing flowers, including the beautiful
peonies she transplanted from her mother’s collection and the Queen Elizabeth roses
that bloomed into early winter. Most of all, she loved cooking wonderful holiday meals
for her family, and her oyster dressing and persimmon pudding cannot be replicated.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and seven of her siblings:
John Paul Jones, Henry Monroe Jones, Gladys Jones Sink, Griffith Lanier Jones, Alvis
Albert Jones, Susan Jones Hughes, Virgil Smith Jones and by a granddaughter,
Elizabeth Anna Windsor.
She is survived by her daughter, Kay Elizabeth Harper Windsor and husband Michael,
her son, Kenneth Jones Harper and wife Cathy; her grandchildren, Matthew Howard
Windsor and wife Beth, Aaron Andrew Windsor and Phoebe, Julie Elizabeth Harper
Watson and husband Tommy and Christopher Smith Harper; by her great-grandchildren
Anna Elizabeth Windsor, Sara Louise Windsor, Maria Catherine Windsor, Leah Clare
Windsor and Patricia Elizabeth Windsor; by four siblings, Lucile Jones Hill, William
Raleigh Jones and wife Dot, Grace Jones Jones, and Phillip Ray Jones and wife Wilma,
sisters-in-law Helen Harper Isaacs and Mamie Phelps Jones, and more than three dozen dear nieces and
nephews in the Jones and Harper families.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, January 14 at Frank Vogler and Sons
Clemmons Chapel, 2849 Middlebrook Drive Clemmons. The Rev. Tom Albert will hold
the funeral service at Concord United Methodist Church in Lewisville at 2 p.m. on
Saturday, January 15. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Concord United Methodist Church, 8955
Concord Church Road, Lewisville, NC 27023 or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center,
