Glenn was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on October 11, 1942, to the late Eugene Shaver and Emily Davis Shaver. His parents served as “Mom and Dad” at the Winston-Salem Children’s Home, so Glenn grew up spending much of his childhood among the children who lived there.
He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School with the Class of 1960. He began his college education at Brevard Junior College, earned his undergraduate degree from East Tennessee State University, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and received his graduate degree from Ball State University in Indiana.
In 1967, shortly after graduating from Ball State, Glenn enlisted in the military. He attained the rank of sergeant and served in the 198th Light Infantry Brigade with the Americal Division in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. His experience shaped him but did not define him. After returning home, he began his career with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem where he steadily climbed the corporate ladder and held various managerial and executive positions at RJR Tobbacoville Plant and the Plaza building in downtown Winston-Salem. He retired from RJ Reynolds after 28 years of service.
Glenn was married to the love of his life, Cecelia “Cele” Hauser Shaver, for 52 years. She preceded him in death in 2024. Together, they raised their two beloved daughters, Ashley and Suzanne, in Clemmons, NC.
Glenn lived in Clemmons since before the stoplights. He was a faithful member of Clemmons United Methodist Church and a founding member of the Jerry Long YMCA. Glenn was a loving husband and father and fiercely protective of his family! He was a dedicated “Pops” to his grandchildren and didn’t miss a wrestling match, baseball game, tennis match or theater performance as long as he was able.
Glenn never met a stranger and considered everyone a good friend. He cherished his friendships. He was always willing to spend a few minutes explaining the stock market to his younger friends or sharing his life’s stories with anyone who would listen. Whether at his local coffee shop, having breakfast at Pete’s or Clemmons Kitchen, he was often recognized as the unofficial, nonpolitical Mayor of Clemmons. Those who knew him would describe him as fun-loving, talkative and quite a character. He was even learning conversational Spanish to chat with some of new friends.
He loved yard work, sports cars, trips to the mountains and the beach, Caribbean cruises, traveling throughout the United States and, occasionally, trying his luck on the slot machines.
More recently, Glenn moved to High Point to be closer to his family and became a resident of Westchester Harbour Assisted Living. He was thriving; exploring new local coffee shops, watching Friday movies and developing new and meaningful friendships. Never once slowing down, he touched the heart of all who encountered him.
He was an Army veteran who served with honor, fought with courage, and faced his final battle with the dignity of a true soldier.
He is survived by his daughters, Ashley McCormick and her partner, Stephen Ells, of High Point, North Carolina, and Suzanne Nguyen and her husband, Tuan, of Las Vegas, Nevada; his grandchildren, Logan McCormick Bass and her husband, Ryan, of Celebration, Florida, Nicholas McCormick and his wife, Kaytlin, of Kernersville, North Carolina, and Madelyn and Andrew Nguyen of Las Vegas; and his sister, Edie Barber and her husband, Krider, of Lewisville, North Carolina.
In addition to his wife and parents, Glenn was preceded in death by his niece, Lisa Barber.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at 1 pm at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3815 Yadkinville Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
