Scotty was born in New Jersey to the late Arthur and Virginia Council Michaelsen. His family moved to Central America where he was raised. In 1988, he retired from the US Marine Corps where he had been a Harrier pilot. He went on to fly for American Airlines and retired again in 2002. It was while with the airlines that he met his wife of over ten years, Patricia Willis who survives him. Together they were accomplished ballroom dancers.
Scotty was very talented in other areas as well. He was an avid photographer and he was an especially highly accomplished wood-worker. At the time of his death he was working on completing their log cabin which he built. He loved riding his motorcycle with Pat. He had a heart for others as was demonstrated by his work with the NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence where he assisted in organizing events and worked at the crisis center. While in New Bern he taught English to Spanish speaking families in the area. His loyalty to his country continued after his active duty service through his membership with Veterans for Peace.
Including his wife Pat, Scotty is survived by his sister, Joya Bocock and her husband Cesar Bocock; daughter, Jodi Michaelsen and son Edward Michaelsen.
