Ms. Shirley Long Hammill of Winston-Salem passed away on July 3, 2018 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Ms. Hammill was born in Gastonia, NC to the late John Kelly Long Jr. and Marguerite Long. She moved to Winston-Salem in 1965, where she raised two children with her husband of 24 years, the late A. J. Hammill.
She is survived by her daughter Leigh Hammill of Washington, DC, son Louis G. Hammill, daughter-in-law Kristin and granddaughter Olivia Hammill of Mocksville NC. Also surviving are her brother John K. Long III, sister-in-law Rebecca, nephews Kelly Long and Alec Long of Gastonia NC, and niece Lydia Kilby of Winston Salem, NC.
Shirley graduated from Gastonia High School and completed a business college program at Stratford College. She was active as a volunteer in many local organizations including the Samaritan Shelter in Winston-Salem, the Red Cross, and Baptist Hospital. During her time with us, she devoted herself to her children and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hiking at Grandfather Mountain, tennis, reading, and local arts.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service, which will be conducted at Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W 5th St, in Winston-Salem, NC on Saturday, July 14 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, or a charity of your choice.
