Susan Richardson Fleming, 69, passed away peacefully at her home on September 3, 2021. She was born on November 17, 1951 to the late Reba Bennett and Thomas Elton Richardson in Danville, Va. As a child, she worked on the family farm and attended schools in the Danville, Va. area. She graduated from Dan River High School in 1970, then attended Averett University in hopes of becoming a teacher. On September 7, 1974 she married David Fleming. She served as a substitute teacher in the Forsyth County School System for a few years, then volunteered at Southwest Elementary School as her children were growing up. She attended Forsyth Technical Community College earning a degree in Management Information Systems. She was a receptionist at the Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America for a few years and was a receptionist at the former Elder Law Clinic at Baptist Hospital. Susan became a den leader for Cub Scout Pack 731 in Clemmons, NC in 1987 and became Cubmaster in 1990 until 1994 and has served on the Pack committee until she passed. She served on the Salem and later the Wachovia Districts of the Old Hickory Council, heading the Salem District Cub Scout day camp during the 1990’s and as a unit commissioner until she passed. In 1997, she was awarded the Salem District Award of Merit for her service. In her free time she was an avid reader, especially Harlequin Romance novels and watching movies on the Hallmark channel. She is survived by her husband David Fleming, sons David Fleming, Jr., Michael Fleming (wife Amber) and daughter Lori Bernstein (husband Christopher). She had four grandchildren, Abigail, Mary, Jack and Reba. She also is survived by a brother, Robert Richardson, and sisters Betty Jane Robinson and Diane Waters. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 6600 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. A memorial service will be held on November 6, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Clemmons United Methodist Church.
