
Thomas H. McBride Sr., 85, of Winston-Salem passed away in the early hours on Thursday, December 23, 2010, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice of Winston-Salem.
He had been a resident of The Lutheran Home of Winston-Salem since 2008. He was born September 25, 1925, to William Walter and Nancy Money McBride.
Thomas graduated from Lewisville High School in 1942 as salutatorian of his senior class.
Thomas was a sergeant with the U.S. Army, in the 88th Quartermaster Company, during World War II in Germany.
He loved his country dearly and served with honors receiving a Victory Medal and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star.
He retired from B/E Aerospace in 1985. Thomas was a devoted Christian man and was of the Baptist faith. He was an avid Duke Blue Devil fan and enjoyed watching games. Thomas loved to read and work crossword puzzles as his hobby.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Jones McBride; a son, Thomas Homer McBride, Jr.; and two brothers, Warren David and Paul Kiger McBride. He is survived by two loving and caring daughters, Deborah Kay McBride Johnson and husband, Gale, and Rita Ann McBride of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren: Michelle, Heather, Caitlin, Ashley and Cameron, who he loved deeply, and was very proud of; one step-grandson, Dustin Johnson; nine great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Damon, Dameon, Brandon, Bridget, Gavin, Trinity, Jackson and Davis; four sisters, Francis Harris of Elkin, Betty Groce of Huntsville, Nancy Warner of Winston-Salem and Karlene Cope of Farmington, who lovingly called him "Homer" and whom he loved dearly; two special friends that always visited and showed their care and support, Astor Norman and Pete Colbert; two sisters-in-laws, Peggy McBride of Florida and Ollie Tuttle of Winston-Salem; one brother-in-law, Jack Jones; and many nieces and nephews who he shared a special bond.
He enjoyed all the family gatherings and chicken stews that his sister, Karlene always held.
Funeral Services will be conducted at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel, 1 p.m., on Monday, December 27, 2010 with Pastors Derrick Hinson and Gary Sisk officiating.
The family will receive friends before the service from 11 a.m. -12:50 p.m. on Monday, December 27, 2010.
