

Virgil L. Hartman, a longtime resident of Winston-Salem, went to meet his Maker on December 9, 2009 at Forsyth Hospital. He was born in Advance in Davie County, NC of which he was very fond. He had worked in his early years at Hanes Knitting in Winston-Salem and played baseball for one of their teams. He maintained a lifelong love for baseball and other sports. He was a historian of sports and of World War II.Virgil has always been a great storyteller and enjoyed his friends and fellow employees. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company where he was a very dedicated employee and was well liked. He was a hard worker and a good provider for his family.He was preceded in death by his father, Enoch Milton Hartman, and mother, Clara Angeline Orrell Hartman and six brothers: Clint Hartman, Bill Hartman, Chick Hartman, George Hartman, Avery Hartman and Charles Gray Hartman.Survivors are his three daughters: Jo Ann Brewer of Maryland; Kay H. Sterling and husband, Ken, of Colfax, NC; Gina Chamberlain and husband, Doug, of Advance, NC; and one son,Kenneth Gray Hartman and his wife, Jane, of Missouri. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.Remaining to cherish his memory and their good times is Margaret Hollar, his friend and buddy until the end.Family will welcome friends for visitation at Vogler Funeral Home, Reynolda Road chapel, on Saturday December 12 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. There will be a graveside service at Advance United Methodist Church in Advance on Sunday December 13 at 2:00 p.m. May he rest in peace with those who went before him.In Virgil’s memory contributions may be made to Advance United Methodist Church, 1911 NC Hwy 801 South, Advance, NC 27006.
