Alfie grew up on Kinsman and was a proud graduate of John Adams High School. He enrolled in the Ohio State University in January 1945. In February 1946, his college education was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in August 1947 as a Sergeant in the Medical Corp. Al returned to Ohio State that September and graduated in June 1949. He attended the Chicago Medical School. After graduating in June 1954, he completed his residency in radiology. The majority of his career was spent at Suburban Community Hospital – now Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital. Dr. Fader provided excellent care for his patients and was a mentor to many highly successful doctors. As a result, his skill as a physician directly and indirectly improved the lives of thousands of patients. In addition to his responsibilities as a doctor, Dr. Fader held numerous administrative positions, including Chief of the Radiology Department and, for more than 10 years, as Chief of Staff of the hospital until his retirement at the age of 75.
Alfie and Harriet traveled the world, including numerous trips to Israel, and adventures in Europe, South America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East. The decorative plates they brought back from every trip are beautifully arrayed in their kitchen as a reminder of their fabulous adventures.
Alfie’s life was enriched by the love of two wonderful women – Delores (of blessed memory) and Harriet, with whom he created a beautiful, blended family of seven children, thirteen grandchildren, and five great-grands. Alfie’s life was full of the joy of family, Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, sporting events, graduations, bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings, vacations and simple everyday time together. Al touched many lives with his kindness, compassion and wisdom. He was blessed with many lifelong friends who brought joy, love and laughter to his life.
Last month, Papa enjoyed a fabulous 99th birthday celebration surrounded by his family. Dr. Fader’s was a life well lived, a life well-loved and a life well served. His greatest accomplishment is his family, and his memory will always be a blessing.
