Daughter of the late Dave and Pearl Cohen. Beloved wife of the late Richard Barson; devoted mother of Jack (Debbi) Barson of Solon and Lisa (Eric) Bronstein of Huntington Woods, MI; loving bubbie of Gabriel, Grant, Jacob, Evan and Benjamin; dear sister of the late Bernard (Teddie z"l) Cohen and the late Daniel (Shirley) Cohen; dear sister-in-law to the late Lloyd (Elaine z"l) Barson and the late Earl (Evelyn) Barson. Favorite Aunt, Great Aunt and friend to many.
Betty was born in Iowa and grew up in Chicago. She attended Chicago Teachers College, where she earned her Masters in Library Science.
She married Richard A. Barson z”l in 1963; they had two children and five grandchildren, and were married for 53 years. After a short stint in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the family moved to Beachwood, Ohio. Betty and Dick were proud Beachwood residents for almost 50 years.
Betty served many years as a librarian at The Cleveland College of Jewish Studies, where she made lifelong friends. Later, Betty devoted decades as a dedicated volunteer for the Beachwood Library, her home away from home.
Betty enjoyed classic movies, old-school comedians and of course books, as an avid reader. Betty’s real joy, however were her five grandsons, boasting about their lives and accomplishments and sharing pictures to any and all.
Always a generous person who insisted on placing others before herself, she will be deeply missed by many.
Graveside funeral services will be held at Mt. Olive Cemetery, 27855 Aurora Rd., Solon, OH 44139 on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 2 PM.
The family requests no visitation at this time.
Contributions in memory of Betty are suggested to The Friends of the Beachwood Public Library (http://www.cuyahoga.lib.oh.us/BeachwoodBranch.aspx) or the Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network (https://jewishhospice.org).
