Doctor Chad Deal passed away on May 8th after a valiant struggle with cancer at the age of 74. Born in Arkansas, Chad went on to Washington University where he met his bride of 52 of years, Andrea Beskind. She then supported him as he went to medical school at University of Arkansas. After training in Boston, Dr. Deal was recruited to Cleveland OH. Chad became a renowned respected rheumatologist practicing medicine, first at University Hospitals and then retiring from The Cleveland Clinic. In his area of metabolic bone disease, he was a respected scholar, teacher and clinician. He was beloved by his colleagues and patients alike.
Chad chose to convert to Judaism at a late age and was typically the smartest guys in the room when it came to Jewish history and text. He loved torah study at Fairmont Temple and later Congregation Mishkan Or. One of his proudest moments was sharing his bar mitzvah with his grandson, Logan Deal.
When son Adam was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Chad’s diligence in scholarly research of treatment for pancreatic cancer left no stone unturned. This led to accessing care options which were able to significantly extend Adam’s life. Chad later became a leading advocate for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN). His commitment to fundraising for research dollars via the Purple Stride Cleveland Metro Parks Zoo event led to his recognition as top contributor for the last six years.
But, most importantly, Chad was the backbone of strength and love in his family. He was delighted when daughter Alexis and grandson Logan moved home from Arizona. His greatest joy was being with them as much as possible. He was a great photographer and there are wonderful photos of near and distant travel on so many wonderful occasions. Best, were his two bike trips with Logan, one to Maine and one to Glacier National Park.
Chad is survived by wife Andrea Beskind Deal, daughter Alexis Irene Deal, grandson Logan Adam Deal and extended chosen family. He is predeceased by his son, Adam Beskind Deal, brother, James Deal and his parents Liz and James Deal.
Funeral services will be held at Congregation Mishkan Or at 2:30 PM on Sunday, May 10th. Interment will be at Mayfield Cemetery, 2749 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights.
Shiva will be observed after the funeral and burial until 8pm on Sunday and on Monday, May 11th from 2-4pm and then from 6-8pm.
