Dorothy Schechter, age 96, of Orange Village, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dorothy was the third youngest of 12 children. She moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio in the 1950s with her beloved husband, Herbert (of blessed memory), where they raised three children: Barbara, Richard, and Roy.
While growing up in New York, Dorothy had a vibrant career including teaching ballroom dancing at the renowned Arthur Murray studio, where she became known for her grace and poise. Dorothy’s love of dance, music and family were some of the many passions she would embrace throughout her life.
In the 1970s, Dorothy transitioned into a successful residential real estate career that spanned over 40 years. Working with several agencies, including Howard Hanna, she earned the admiration of many clients and colleagues. She retired around 2012, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, integrity, and kindness.
Dorothy was an active member of The Temple Tifereth Israel for many years and cherished her role in the community. She was known for her love of music, her golfing prowess, and her outstanding culinary skills.
She was predeceased by her dear husband, Herbert, and is survived by her children, Barbara, Richard, and Roy (wife Kathleen), as well as her beloved grandchildren: Gordon Schechter, Haley Schechter, Daniel Feldman, and great grandchild Lilly Schechter. Dorothy is also survived by her last surviving sibling, Thelma Fleischer of Mountainside, New Jersey.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 2nd, at 10:30 AM at Mayfield Cemetery, on what would have been Dorothy’s 97th birthday. The family invites those who knew her to join in honoring her memory.
